“On entering our Home, we should feel like our home in Mangalore”, said our client upon asking for a brief. A language was derived with the quest to merge Contemporary with the culture and balance the characteristics of the individual user and their likes.

Apartment 1401 is a 3200 sq.ft. site based in Goregaon West, Mumbai. Open along its length with 6 feet wide balcony running from one end to the other, the site had ample of west light filtering into the house.

The introduction to the house is the Big Mangalorian carved door.

The living room is planned to have 4 functions. The verandah, the temple and the meditation room which is all partitioned with a panel of wooden framed and louvered shutters.

Living room is a large square of 600 sq.ft. area comprising of the dining table and two sets of seating – a formal and an informal intervened by a chaise in the center.

The material palette of Grey wall paper, beige flooring and the wood accentuates the traditional elements very subtly in the space. The traditional carved columns reflects its presence from the verandah into the Living room.

The design of the bedroom speaks of the characteristics and the personality of the user.

A young doctors room was designed to be casual and spontaneous with a low bed a demand for variety in storage for his essentials built a plane that opened, folded displaying his requirements through a grid of lines following the functions.

The daughters room reflected her identity weaving her delicate and bold personality in the white and gold material palette.

The master bedroom is a bold ethnic personality with a contemporary edge to it and the art work adds personalized elements in the space.
